1975 World Series: Game 6

Fisk HR ends greatest game ever played

Game 6, at Boston, Oct.22, 1975 — This was the World Series that rocketed baseball back into the public consciousness, and this is the game that did it.

Part of the reason was a three-day rain delay.

“All that rain in Boston turned it into Super Bowl week,” recalled Pete Rose, years later. “It was just us, the Red Sox and all that mass media. It had already been a helluva World Series to that point, and the rain just increased the anticipation for Game 6.”

Great games have great plays and great hits at dramatic moments; this one had four. All occurred from the eighth inning on, by which time the Reds had rallied from a 3-0 deficit to take a 6-3 lead (a two-run double by Ken Griffey Sr. and an RBI single by Johnny Bench in the fifth; a two-run double by George Foster in the seventh; a Cesar Geronimo home run in the eighth).

        • Great moment No.1: With two on and two out in the bottom of the eighth, former Red Bernie Carbo hit a pinch-hit homer to center field on a 1-2 pitch from Reds closer Rawly Eastwick to tie it 6-6.

        • Great moment No.2: In the ninth, Foster caught Fred Lynn's foul-pop in short left field and threw home to Bench to nail Denny Doyle, who was attempting to tag up from third.

        • Great moment No.3: In the 11th, Red Sox right fielder Dwight Evans made a terrific over-the-shoulder catch of a deep drive by Joe Morgan and doubled up Griffey at second base.

        • Great moment No.4: In the bottom of the 12th, Boston's Carlton Fisk homered off Pat Darcy (and the left-field foul pole) to win this classic.

It is still regarded as the greatest World Series game ever played.
