1975 World Series: Game 4
Red Sox got money's worth from Tiant
Game 4, at Cincinnati, Oct. 15, 1975
There's no way New York Yankees starting pitcher Orlando El Duque Hernandez or any other pitcher in 2000 would be allowed to throw 163 pitches in one game.
But 25 years ago, pitchers in general and Red Sox starter Luis Tiant in specific were built differently. Tiant threw 163 pitches in Game 4.
Most of those pitches were pretty good ones, as the Red Sox beat the Reds 5-4 behind Tiant's complete game.
Reds manager Sparky Anderson wasn't immune from the second guess: He held back on utilizing his terrific left-handed hitter, Dan Driessen, waiting for the right situation. It never came.
In the sixth inning, with two out and a runner on first, Anderson chose light-hitting Darrell Chaney to pinch-hit; he struck out. In the ninth, with one on and one out, Anderson already had two left-handers coming up, but Ken Griffey Sr. (robbed of a game-tying hit by Sox center fielder Fred Lynn) and Joe Morgan (pop-up) were stymied.
Anderson was grilled about his inability to get Driessen into the batter's box. The worst of it came from Sparky's 14-year-old son, Albert, who said to his dad: I'm really sorry to hear Danny Driessen died.
