Reds search to gain focus this week
By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer
NEW YORK The managerial dominoes have begun to fall, or at least teeter, which will invariably reflect the Reds' approach to their vacancy.
Lou Piniella, who is believed to be a leading candidate for the job, will discuss his future with top officials from his current team, the Seattle Mariners, on Wednesday. Shortly after that, it should become apparent whether Piniella will stay with Seattle or interview for the Reds and Toronto Blue Jays jobs, as has been speculated.
The Pittsburgh Pirates filled their managerial opening Monday by hiring former utility player Lloyd McClendon, whose playing career included a stint with the Reds. That eliminated a possible suitor for Piniella, since the Pirates were interested in interviewing him for the job.
It also could have heightened the urgency for some of the Reds' candidates to find a job. Two people they interviewed, Buck Showalter and Ken Macha, also talked with Pittsburgh.
The Reds have at least seven other candidates who have interviewed or will soon do so: Bob Boone, Ken Griffey Sr., Davey Johnson, Gene Lamont, Hal McRae, Ron Oester and Willie Randolph.
