Manager interviews winding down

By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer

NEW YORK — Indications are the Reds are finishing their first round of interviews for their managerial vacancy.

A replacement for Jack McKeon will not be named before the end of the World Series. Since general manager Jim Bowden is due to arrive here today, he and some of his assistants are expected to interview Yankees third-base coach Willie Randolph sometime this week.

At least one of the known candidates was told he would be notified by the end of this week whether he would receive further consideration, suggesting Bowden soon could have a “short list” of two, three or four finalists to submit to chief executive officer Carl Lindner and chief operating officer John Allen.

The Reds said in a statement on Oct.12 that interviews with “10 to 12” candidates had been scheduled. Whether former Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers manager Davey Johnson is among those candidates remains speculative. Reached at his home near Orlando, Fla., this weekend, the usually candid Johnson said through his wife, Susan, that he would not answer questions about Cincinnati's managerial position.

Since Reds management has attempted to maintain secrecy in its search process, Johnson may have been complying with the club's wishes, or simply could have been tired of talking.

Besides Randolph, others known to have interviewed or who soon will do so are Bob Boone, Ken Griffey Sr., Gene Lamont, Ken Macha, Hal McRae, Ron Oester and Buck Showalter.
