Dykstra joins Reds as Single-A manager
By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer
NEW YORK Former outfielder Lenny Dykstra, who starred with the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies, has agreed to terms on a two-year contract to manage the Reds' Single-A Mudville Nine, Reds minor-league director Tim Naehring said Sunday.
Dykstra has no managerial experience, though he had expressed interest in returning to baseball in that capaci ty. He said he had past offers to be a major-league coach. But he wanted to be with the young guys, Naehring said.
Dykstra had a reputation for constant, sincere effort as a player.
We're trying to get these guys to learn to play hard on a daily basis. A guy like that will be a great addition to the organization, Naehring said.
Naehring said Dykstra initially will be assisted by ex-Reds manager Russ Nixon, who manages the rookie-league Billings club that starts play in June.
The Mudville team, which moved from Clinton, Iowa, will play in Stockton, Calif.
