Reds to interview Randolph

By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer

NEW YORK — With general manager Jim Bowden and some of his top lieutenants headed here for the World Series, they'll probably try to interview New York Yankees third-base coach Willie Randolph, one of the candidates for Cincinnati's managerial vacancy, at some point in the next several days.

“It's tentative for next week,” Randolph said Friday. “We'll work it out.”

Randolph will have to squeeze in the Reds among his other appointments. He also is expected to interview for the Philadelphia Phillies' and Los Angeles Dodgers' managerial vacancies.

Next week also should be when the Reds learn whether Seattle manager Lou Pi niella will be free to entertain Cincinnati as an employment option. Three of the top figures in Mariners management — chief executive officer Howard Lincoln, chief operating officer Chuck Armstrong and general manager Pat Gillick — are expected to conduct a summit meeting with Piniella at his Tampa, Fla., home to determine whether mutual interest exists in extending his contract, which expires at the end of the month.
