Reds' list has 43 potential managers
Oester, McRae among those to be interviewed
By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer
ST. LOUIS Ron Oester, Ken Griffey Sr., Hal McRae, Bob Boone and others know they'll be interviewed for the Reds' managerial opening. So might your neighbor, your child's P.E. teacher or that woman who works at the checkout counter.
The Reds announced Thursday that team officials have compiled a wish list of 43 people who might be considered for the job. This barely lifted the cloak of absolute secrecy club management has thrown over its hunt.
Under a literal interpretation of the news release, the word person suggested that the Reds' search might even include females.
The Reds stressed that they won't necessarily contact 43 individuals, noting that only 10-12 interviews already have been scheduled.
Oester, Cincinnati's third-base coach, confirmed Thursday night that he has scheduled an interview, adding that club officials asked him not to reveal the date.
McRae, most recently Philadelphia's hitting coach and a former Kansas City Royals manager, said that his interview has been scheduled for Monday.
Agent Brian Goldberg, who represents Griffey Sr., Cincinnati's bench coach, said during Thursday afternoon his client had not yet established a date but probably would soon. Sources close to the Pittsburgh Pirates' managerial search have saidGriffey also could emerge as a candidate for that opening.
Boone, one of general manager Jim Bowden's special assistants who interviewed Wednesday for Philadelphia's managerial vacancy, has confirmed the Reds will talk to him, too.
The Reds have asked the Oak land A's for permission to interview their bench coach, Ken Macha.Macha, who has interviewed for Pittsburgh's vacancy, said Thursdaythe Reds have not scheduled anything with him.
Others Cincinnati mighttry to contact include Seattle Mariners manager Lou Piniella and former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Davey Johnson.
The Reds have no chance of hiring the widely popular Dusty Baker, who has started negotiations for a contract extension with San Francisco management. Baker's contract technically expires Dec. 31, so any team seeking his services would have to ask he Giants for permission to interview him. Since Giants general manager Brian Sabean has made no secret of his loathing for Bowden, Baker's closest encounter with the Reds will come when whatever team he's managing plays Cincinnati.
