Davey out as Dodger boss?

Team denies paper's report

While the Reds were breaking ground Wednesday on their new ballpark for 2003, events unfolded 3,000 miles away that could affect their search for a manager for 2001.

A Los Angeles Times report Wednesday said the Dodgers have decided not to retain manager Davey Johnson, a former Reds manager and favorite of general manager Jim Bowden.

The Times, citing unidentified sources, said Johnson was informed last week by chairman Bob Daly and president Bob Graziano that he would not be brought back for the 2001 season, the last on his contract. A news conference will be held Friday at Dodger Stadium when Johnson returns from vacation, the paper said.

Dodgers senior vice president Derrick Hall said Johnson will meet with club executives Friday, but Hall denied that a decision has been made on Johnson's future.

Johnson managed the Dodgers to an 86-76 record and a second-place finish in the NL West. His teams have finished first or second in 11 of his 12 full seasons. But The Dodgers' $94.2 million payroll, third-highest in baseball, raised expectations for a playoff berth this year.

Johnson led the Reds to the National League Championship Series in 1995, and his 1994 club was leading the division at the time of the strike.

The Reds have not confirmed that Johnson, or anyone else at this point, is a managerial candidate.

“I'm not going to comment on the process until it's over. To anybody,” Reds general manager Jim Bowden said.

Reds chief operating officer John Allen affirmed Wednesday that the team's top officials will participate in the selection of a manager.

Asked whether he and chief executive officer Carl Lindner will be involved in choosing Jack McKeon's successor, Allen said: “Not too involved until we get down to a couple of the final candidates. But certainly the ownership group will be involved in the final selection.”
