Reds-Cardinals Scouting Report
The series: Cincinnati (83-76, second place NL Central) at St.Louis (94-65, first place NL Central).
Where: Busch Stadium, St.Louis.
When: 8:10p.m. today; 2:10p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Radio: WLW-AM (700).
TV: Fox Sports Network, today and Sunday.
The bats: St. Louis has the same batting average (.272) as the Reds but has scored (869-799) more runs. That's largely due to the Cardinals' 231 homers, second in the league behind Houston's 245.
The arms: Today Ron Villone (9-10, 5.80 ERA) vs. Garrett Stephenson (16-8, 4.38);
Saturday Osvaldo Fernandez (3-3, 3.96) vs. Pat Hentgen (15-11, 4.59);
Sunday Steve Parris (12-16, 4.68) vs. Andy Benes (11-9, 4.95).
All you need to know about the Cardinals' improvement is that they rank fifth in the league with a 4.34 ERA, compared to their 4.74 ERA last year, which was 11th in the league.
The rest: The Reds have split their 10 games with St. Louis this year, including two losses in three games at Busch Stadium July 4-6.
