Reds won't break attendance record

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Reds drew 26,999 fans Sunday, pushing their season total to 2,476,845. With only three home dates remaining, the franchise record of 2,629,708, set in 1976, is safe.

Allen expects the Reds to draw 30,000-plus for a three-game weekend series with Houston beginning Friday.

“I've projected 2.57 million for the season,” Allen said.

That would be the second-highest total in franchise his tory. Allen would not go so far as to say he was disappointed with the total, although in the heady days after the trade for Ken Griffey Jr., the Reds projected high numbers.

“I've have mixed emotions,” Allen said. “Anytime you draw the second most in franchise history, it's great. I don't want to say disappointed, but after the Griffey trade I thought we had a great shot at breaking the record.”

Two factors, Allen says, hurt the Reds:

        • They had only nine home dates in July. “That traditionally is one of best months,” Allen said.

        • They were out of the pennant race in September. “September is a tough month with the kids back in school and high school football, college football and the NFL on Sundays,” Allen said. “It's a hard draw if you're not in the pennant race.”
