Reds may still get grass
Allen says 50-50 chance
By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer
A year later, the Reds may get the grass surface they wanted for this season.
Chief operating officer John Allen says there's a 50-50 chance the team will instala natural surface at Cinergy Field for the 2001 season. Two weeks ago, Allen told The Enquirer there was a slim chance grass would be installed.
Whether they do depends on the demolition schedule for the center field red seats, which must be removed to make way for the construction of Great American Ball Park.
That's our No.1 priority, Allen said. We won't do anything that will interfere with that schedule.
Crews have already torn down much of the garage on the east side of the stadium. They will begin tearing out the center field section as soon as the home season concludes Sept. 24.
We'll know in the next month whether we can put grass in or not, Allen said.
The Reds would have installed grass for this season, but the Bengals, as the co-tenant, said no, fearing that Paul Brown Stadium might not be ready.
