Kroger pulls Griffey cereal box
By Jennifer Mrozowski
The Cincinnati Enquirer
A customer complaint about the cereal in a box of Wheaties caused Greater Cincinnati Kroger Co. stores to remove from their shelves all orange boxes with Ken Griffey Jr.'s picture.
The complaint did not involve illness, said Lynn Marmer, Kroger's group vice president for corporate affairs.
We're taking the product off the shelves until we can look into it more closely, Ms. Marmer said.
She could not give specifics of the complaint nor the store where the complaint originated, she said.
Kroger stores received a message Saturday morning to remove the orange Griffey boxes, Ms. Marmer said. Mr. Griffey is also pictured on a blue box of Frosted Wheaties.
Other Kroger stores, such as those in Burlington, Fort Mitchell and downtown Cincinnati at Vine Street, referred calls to corporate offices.
Calls to several other area grocery stores, such as Bigg's in Florence and Thriftway in Hyde Park and Alexandria, found that Wheaties were still on the shelves and no complaints had been received.
Ms. Marmer said the next step is to call General Mills, the company that makes Wheaties, to inform it of the complaint. The boxes in question will remain off shelves until Kroger Co.'s team of scientists conducts tests, Ms. Marmer said.
Removing all the Griffey orange boxes of Wheaties for one customer complaint is a precautionary measure, Ms. Marmer said.
