Reds - Marlins Scouting Report

        • The series: Cincinnati (62-64, second place NL Central) vs. Florida (62-64, third place NL East)

        • Where: Pro Player Stadium, Miami.

        • When: 7:05 p.m. today, 7:15 p.m. Saturday, 4:05 p.m. Sunday.

        • Radio: WLW-AM (700).

        • TV: Fox Sports Network, Sunday.

        • Pitching matchups: Today, Elmer Dessens (5-4, 4.95 ERA) vs. Reid Cornelius (3-6, 4.15); Saturday, Pete Harnisch (5-6, 4.81) vs. Jesus Sanchez (8-9, 4.95); Sunday, Rob Bell (5-7, 4.97) vs. Ryan Dempster (11-9, 3.68).

        • The bats: Not much distinguishes the Marlins offensively. They rank 14th in runs scored and home runs. The quintessential Florida hitter is Preston Wilson, who has impressive production numbers (21 homers, 93 RBI) but is on pace to set a major-league strikeout record. He has 160 so far.

        • The arms: Antonio Alfonseca (36 saves) remains the National League's most prolific closer. Dempster, who beat the Reds on Aug. 4, ranks fifth in the league in strikeouts (161), seventh in opponents' batting average (.242), ninth in ERA (3.68) and 10th in innings pitched (178 1/3).

        • The rest: Florida swept the Reds at Cinergy Field in a three-game series Aug. 4-6, hastening Cincinnati's descent into mediocrity.
