Alex Ochoa's first-inning grand slam almost became an afterthought in the Reds' 5-4 loss Tuesday night to the Philadelphia Phillies. Actually, it'll live in posterity.
Ochoa's blast off Phillies starter Bruce Chen was the 142nd grand slam hit this season, breaking the major-league record of 141 set in 1996. It also was the fifth slam hit by a Red this year, matching a pair by Ken Griffey Jr. and one apiece by Dante Bichette and Dmitri Young.
San Diego's Damian Jackson, a former Red, hit grand slam No. 141 earlier Tuesday.
Ochoa happened to be hitless in his previous 14 at-bats. He ended that skid by lofting Chen's 0-2 pitch an estimated 384 feet over the left-field barrier for his first career grand slam.
Combined with Young's red-seat blast in Monday night's series opener, it marked the first time the Reds had recorded grand slams in consecutive games since May 4-5, 1996, when Eric Davis pulverized San Francisco.
