        BORN

        • George Lee Anderson, February 22, 1934, in Bridgewater, S.D.

        FAMILY

        Wife Carol, sons Lee and Albert, daughter Shirlee, 14 grandchildren.

        RESUME

        • 1959: Played one season in the majors, hitting .218 with no homers and 34 RBI in 152 games as Philadelphia Phillies second baseman.

        • 1970: Named Reds manager at age 35 and led team to World Series, where it lost the Baltimore Orioles 4-1.

        • 1972: Led Reds to World Series, where they lost to Oakland A's 4-3.

        • 1973: Led Reds to NL West pennant, lost to Mets in NLCS.

        • 1975: Led Reds to World Series title, beating the Boston Red Sox 4-3.

        • 1976: Led Reds to World Series title, sweeping the New York Yankees 4-0.

        • 1978: Fired as Reds manager.

        • 1979: Took over for Les Moss as Detroit Tigers manager on June 14.

        • 1984: Led Tigers to World Series, beating the San Diego Padres 3-1.

        • 1987: Led Tigers to AL East title.

        • 1995: Walked out of spring training rather than work with replacements during a players' strike.

        • 1995: Retired after leading the Tigers to 60-84 record and a fourth-place fininsh in the AL East.

        ACCOMPLISHMENTS

•         Only manager to win world championships in both leagues — 1975-76 in Cincinnati and 1984 in Detroit.

        • Managed 17 consecutive winning teams.

        • His 2,194 career victories rank third all-time behind only Connie Mack (3,731) and John McGraw (2,763).

        • His career record in the postseason — 34-21 (.614) — is one of the best of all-time.

        • Manager of the Year in the National League in 1972 and 1975 (Associated Press), and in the American League in 1984 and 1987 (Baseball Writers Association of America).

        • Won five NL West titles, four pennants, and two World Series with Reds.

        • Sixteenth manager to make Hall.

        HALL ELECTION

Anderson was elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility with the Veterans' Committee, whose responsiblity, amond other things, is to choose the managers worthy of Valhalla.
