Neagle has a well-rounded day
By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer
PHOENIX Denny Neagle has benefited from some of the Reds' biggest offensive outputs. This time, he contributed to his embarrassment of riches.
Neagle capped Cincinnati's five-run first inning with an RBI single before adding a double in his next at-bat. He finished 2-for-4, hiking his season average to .200, in the Reds' 14-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
It was Neagle's fifth career two-hit game and first as a Red. His last multi-hit performance was Aug. 27, 1998, against St. Louis while with Atlanta.
That's definitely a bonus, when you can mix in a "two-for' day as a pitcher, Neagle said. Obviously, that's always fun when you can put the ball in play and get a couple of knocks.
More importantly, Neagle added, I was glad I was able to stay focused and pitch my ballgame.
A relatively high pitch count prevented Neagle (7-2) from recording the Reds' first complete game of the season. He threw 119 pitches (83 strikes), in seven innings, allowing eight hits and both Arizona runs.
Thus, the Reds set a dubious franchise record. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, they've never gone this far into the season without a complete game. Dave Burba threw one in Game 81 in 1997. Sunday marked the Reds' 81st game, including the Opening Day tie.
