Reds-Padres Scouting Report
The series: Cincinnati Reds (32-32, second place NL Central) at San Diego Padres (27-37, fifth place NL West).
Where: Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego.
When: 9:05 p.m. today, 4:10 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday.
Radio: WLW-AM (700).
TV: Fox Sports Network, today; Channel 19, Saturday.
The bats: Former Red Eric Owens just might be San Diego's leading All-Star candidate. He ranks among the league leaders with a .343 average and 28 multi-hit games. Al Martin is hitting .318 with 44 runs. Second baseman Bret Boone, another former Red, is in a 6-for-55 slump that has yanked his average down to .251.
The arms: Today Steve Parris (2-9, 5.37 ERA) vs. Brian Meadows (5-5, 4.54);
Saturday Ron Villone (6-3, 5.58) vs. Adam Eaton (1-0, 2.89);
Sunday Rob Bell (4-5, 4.76) vs. Matt Clement (5-6, 4.75).
Sterling Hitchcock, Woody Williams and Carlton Loewer, projected to be the Padres' top three starters this year, are on the disabled list. As a result, the Reds will be facing an extremely young group of starters. Meadows is 24; Eaton is 22; and Clement is 25.
The rest: San Diego has committed 66 errors, most in the major leagues. The Padres are 4-21 against division leaders and 23-16 against other opponents, though that record includes three losses in Cincinnati on May 9-11.
