Al Martin is hitting .318 with 44 runs. Second baseman Bret Boone, another former Red, is in a 6-for-55 slump that has yanked his average down to .251.

        • The arms: Today — Steve Parris (2-9, 5.37 ERA) vs. Brian Meadows (5-5, 4.54);

        Saturday — Ron Villone (6-3, 5.58) vs. Adam Eaton (1-0, 2.89);

        Sterling Hitchcock, Woody Williams and Carlton Loewer, projected to be the Padres' top three starters this year, are on the disabled list. As a result, the Reds will be facing an extremely young group of starters. Meadows is 24; Eaton is 22; and Clement is 25.
