White Sox-Reds Scouting Report




        >• The series: Reds (31-24 first place in the National League Central) vs. Chicago White Sox (32-23 first place in the AL Central).

        • Where: Cinergy Field

        • When: Today at 7:35 p.m., Tuesday at 7:35 p.m., Wednesday at 12:35 p.m.

        • Radio: WLW-AM (700).

        • TV: Fox Sports Net tonight.

        • The bats: Frank Thomas has returned to form. Thomas leads the American League in batting average (.447) with runners in scoring position. He is also among the leaders in on-base percentage at .423. He is hitting .328 with 11 homers and 42 RBI. Magglio Ordonez is hitting .292 with 10 homers and 36 RBI. Carlos Lee is hitting .287 with 13 homers and 42 RBI.

        • The arms: Today — RHP Steve Parris (2-7, 5.25) vs. RHP James Baldwin (8-1, 3.09).

        Tuesday — LHP Ron Villone (6-1, 3.72) vs. RHP Cal Eldred (5-2, 4.15).

        Wednesday — RHP Rob Bell (4-2, 4.20) vs. Jim Parque (5-2, 4.09).

        Pitching is what has kept the White Sox above .500. Their team ERA (4.44) is second in the American League. Baldwin has a 1.58 ERA on the road. Opponents are hitting only .221 against him. That's third in the AL. Eldred is fifth at .230. Closer Keith Foulke has converted 11 of 12 save chances. His ERA is 0.76.

        • The rest: The Reds and White Sox did not play last year, so the Red could play home and away series with the Cleveland Indians. The Reds are 2-3 all-time versus the White Sox in the regular season. The Reds are 1-1 at Comiskey Park (1998) and 1-2 at Cinergy Field ('97).
