The 10-year-old granddaughter of Reds owner Carl Lindner was injured Sunday when Ken Griffey Jr. lost the grip on his bat and it flew into the stands, hitting her in the forehead.
Christine Lindner required two stitches.
Hitting .200 and I do that. I'm gone, Griffey joked after hearing the girl was all right.
I feel bad, he said. You don't want to hurt anyone.
Christine was sitting in the first row behind the Reds dugout.
Reds chief operating officer John Allen vainly tried to reach over and shield the girl from the second row.
I was trying, he told the Associated Press.
Allen immediately moved down to help the girl. A trainer in the dugout tossed Allen a towel for the girl.
Griffey stood outside the batter's box watching. The game was held up for a couple of minutes, until it became apparent that the girl was not seriously hurt.
I wouldn't mind as much if it was an adult but when it's a kid, that's the kind of thing that ruins an at-bat or your whole day, Griffey said. You just don't want to see things like that happen unless it's some loudmouth who's been on you the whole time.
