Giants rooting for Fernandez
Reds starter surprisingly successful
By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer
When Osvaldo Fernandez pitches for the Reds today, the San Francisco Giants will be watching. Maybe with a little bit of envy but definitely with some joy.
Fernandez received a three-year, $3.2 million contract from the Giants before the 1996 season but was sidelined by elbow problems in the middle of the 1997 season. With Fernandez unable to pitch in the majors last year after undergoing extensive rehabilitation, San Francisco finally released him after the '99 season.
The Reds are reaping the benefits of Fernandez's rehab work with the Giants. He takes a 2-0 record and 3.08 ERA into today's start against Minnesota.
We ran out of rope, relatively speaking, in terms of seeing light at the end of the tunnel, Giants general man ager Brian Sabean said. We met with our medical people and it was their relative recommendation that we probably stay clear (of re-signing Fernandez) because of the time, energy and money we spent in the past.
Though Fernandez was only 10-17 with the Giants, Sabean has enjoyed his success with Cincinnati: Personally, I hope the guy is a 20-game winner.
Fernandez will oppose Twins left-hander Mark Redman (4-0, 3.59), who leads all American League rookies in wins and strikeouts.
