Griffey slumping again
REDS NOTEBOOK
By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Ken Griffey Jr. went 0-for-3 with a walk Sunday. He has only four hits in his last 33 at-bats (.121). Griffey entered Sunday's game tied with Mark McGwire for the major-league lead in walks with 46.
Griffey played 127 games in 1989 and 142 games in '92 and only walked 44 times each year.
NUMBERS GAMES: Scott Williamson is striking out 13.8 batters per nine innings pitched. Arizona's Randy Johnson is league leader in the category, which is limited to starters, at 12.4.
ATTENDANCE: The Reds drew 36,754 Sunday, pushing their season attendance to 775,907 after 25 dates. That's an average of 31,036. After 25 dates last year, the Reds had drawn 512,011 and were averaging 20,480.
Tony Perez Weekend helped the Reds pull in 108,516 for the three games with the Marlins.
PICTURE DAY: About 3,500 fans lined up before the game to take pictures of the Reds. The Reds posed along gating set up in the outfield.
O-FOR FINALLY: Chris Sexton, the shortstop for the Reds' Triple-A team at Louisville, went 0-for-5 in the RiverBats' 10-3 loss to Scranton. That ended Sexton's 20-game hitting streak. It was also the first in the RiverBats' 43 games this season that Sexton, a St. Xavier High and Miami University product, did not reach base.
HARNISCH UPDATE: Pete Harnisch will have the strength in his shoulder tested Tuesday. If all goes well, he'll be cleared to begin throwing.
Harnisch has been on the disabled list since May 5 with weakness in his right (throwing) rotator cuff. He's been working out with physical therapist Lonnie Soloff since.
We'll retest it Tuesday, Harnisch said. It's the same test we did two weeks ago. I could start throwing Tuesday. But nothing's definite.
UP NEXT: The Reds are off today, their first Memorial Day off since 1995. They open a three-game series with the Montreal Expos with a 7:35 p.m. game Tuesday.
The Expos, at 25-21, have played beyond expectations.
Right-hander Osvaldo Fernandez (1-0, 3.72) faces right-hander Tony Armas (0-2, 3.50) in the series opener.
