Verdict still out on Rockies

New lineup has 2-4 record

The Associated Press

DENVER — With a revamped lineup that was designed to be more road-worthy, the Colorado Rockies achieved mixed results. Now they'll see how their new act plays at home.

The Rockies, 2-4 on their six-game road trip to open the season, kick off the Coors Field part of their 2000 schedule today when they entertain the Reds.

Colorado, de-emphasizing power in favor of improved pitching, defense and speed, went 1-2 in its opening series in Atlanta, then 1-2 at Florida. The Rockies won the middle game of each three-game series, and every game was close.

“Looking over this stretch, we really could have won all of them,” new manager Buddy Bell said. “That's what's been frustrating.”

For the most part, the Rockies had problems getting key hits and scoring runs on their road trip, but some of that is attributable to injuries to the heart of their order.

Right fielder Larry Walker has missed two games with a slightly torn calf muscle. Left fielder Jeffrey Hammonds has missed the last five games with a pulled left hamstring. Third baseman Jeff Cirillo strained his left thumb and has missed the last two games.

Walker will play today, but Hammonds and Cirillo remain doubtful.

Colorado's Rolando Arrojo (0-0) will oppose Cincinnati's Steve Parris (0-1) today.
