        • THE ARMS: Ron Villone was hit hard but also was victimized by third baseman Aaron Boone's pair of errors that generated three unearned third-inning runs. Villone will have another chance to tune up against Baltimore on Saturday in Chattanooga in the team's exhibition finale. Relievers Scott Williamson, Hector Mercado — who's now unscored upon in 15 innings — and Danny Graves each worked a scoreless inning, lowering the bullpen's ERA to 2.78 in the last eight games.

        • THE BATS: After trimming the deficit to one run with their ninth-inning rally, the Reds had the bases loaded and one out when Hal Morris bounced into a game-ending double play. Ken Griffey Jr. (6-for-13, .462, six RBI in his last four games) and Dante Bichette (9-for-19, .474, five RBI in his last five) stayed hot.

        • THE REST: Morris had three hits and turned in the baserunning play of the day when he beat Gabe Kapler's strong third-inning throw home to score from second base on Griffey's single.
