        • THE ARMS: Starter Hector Mercado pitched three scoreless innings to continue his run for a roster spot ... Scott Winchester allowed three runs and five hits in the fourth inning, but he wasn't hit hard ... Gabe White allowed three runs in an inning; he was hit hard ... Eddie Gaillard pitched the 10th and 11th innings to get his second win of the spring and was optioned to Triple-A Louisville afterward.

        • THE BATS: The Reds had a spring-high 18 hits ... Shortstop Travis “Gookie” Dawkins hit his second home run in as many games ... Aaron Boone had a home run and four RBI.

        • THE REST: Pokey Reese was hit by a pitch from Rich Garces. “Right above the ribs,” Reese said. “It stung a little.”

        • UP NEXT: The Reds play the Pittsburgh Pirates at Ed Smith Stadium at 1:05 p.m. today. Osvaldo Fernandez will start against former Red Pete Schourek.
