Pokey may return Saturday

REDS NOTEBOOK

BY CHRIS HAFT
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Manager Jack McKeon said he was “shooting for Saturday” as the date when second baseman Pokey Reese would return to the lineup.

Reese, who sprained his right ring finger on March 3, has intensified his baseball-related activities this week by taking batting and fielding practice.

MINOR WORK: General Manager Jim Bowden said relievers Scott Sullivan and Gabe White will pitch three innings apiece in minor-league exhibitions today to give them some necessary work.

Bowden added that reserve position players such as Hal Morris also will appear in minor-league games because of the lack of opportunities in major-league exhibitions.

DEFENSIVE PRESENCE: First baseman Sean Casey has looked smoother at first base. He has no errors so far.

Polishing range and footwork have been among Casey's defensive priorities.

“It's funny. When I first came up in the minors, I probably was a little below-average first baseman, and that always sticks with me,” Casey said. “Once you get that label, you never shake it no matter what you do. It's an everyday thing for me. Work, work, work, work, work. It's something that has been important to me and something I always need to work on.”
