Reds Game Report
Reds 6, Rangers 5
Dmitri Young's solo home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Reds to a 6-5 victory over the Rangers at Ed Smith Stadium.
Hal Morris singled home the tying run in the Reds' three-run eighth. Eddie Taubensee's pinch single drove in the fourth run.
Ruben Mateo's two-run home run off Gabe White (1-1) gave the Rangers a 4-2 lead in the seventh.
Third baseman Aaron Boone made two errors. He also collided with Barry Larkin tracking a pop foul behind third base by Jason McDonald.
The collision knocked the ball out of Larkin's glove, for an error on Larkin. On the next batter, Boone was charged with an error for a throw in the dirt, enabling the Rangers' first run to score on the grounder by pitcher Estaban Loaiza in the second inning.
The Rangers scored their second run on an RBI single by Ivan Rodriguez, the third of three straight singles to left in the fifth.
THE ARMS: Reds starter Rob Bell went three innings, issuing three walks while allowing only one hit. The only run he allowed was unearned.
Bell is battling Mark Portugal and Osvaldo Fernandez for the fifth spot in the rotation.
His control was off, Reds manager Jack McKeon said. He was behind on too many hitters. He had a better outing last time. He didn't have his sharp stuff, but he got the job done and that's the name of the game.
THE BATS: Larkin hit a two-run home run to left in the fifth. It also scored Chris Stynes, who singled. Alex Ochoa and Young both doubled for the Reds' only other extra-base hits. Young scored the third run on a wild pitch.
UP NEXT: The Reds (7-6) visit the Pirates today at 1:05 p.m. in Bradenton. Left-hander Ron Villone (0-0) will oppose right-hander Francisco Cordova. McKeon said that all of his regular players will make the trip.
