Griffey shows off glove, arm
REDS NOTEBOOK
The Cincinnati Enquirer
SARASOTA, Fla. Ken Griffey Jr. gave an impressive defensive display in the Reds' 6-5 victory over the Texas Rangers Saturday night.
He threw out Rusty Greer at the plate as Greer tried to score from second base on a single by Rafael Palmeiro in the fifth. And he tracked down two deep fly balls that were hit over his head by Ivan Rodriguez.
It was great to see that, Reds manager Jack McKeon said. We had a good center fielder last year (Mike Cameron) but he didn't have the kind of arm Griff has. He got rid of the ball so quick, he had the guy by five feet.
He's so smooth, he glides out there, McKeon said. You're used to those being spectacular plays (by anybody else). They're basically routine for him.
At the plate, Griffey went 0-for-2 after being hit by a pitch in the first inning. He lined out in the third and struck out in the fifth against reliever Jeff Zimmerman.
POKEY CLOSE: Second baseman Pokey Reese will work out Monday and might play on Tuesday, McKeon said. Reese has a jammed ring finger on his right hand from the spring opener and hasn't played since.
Maybe Tuesday or hopefully Wednesday. We're not going to rush him, McKeon said.
DEION DEBUT: Deion Sanders will make his spring debut in a minor league game this morning. Sanders had surgery on his right knee on Jan. 24.
