Reds Game Report

Reds 6, Twins 5; Devil Rays 2, Reds 1

BY CHRIS HAFT
The Cincinnati Enquirer

        • THE ARMS: Scott Winchester remained unscored upon this spring after making his fourth appearance and earning the save against the Twins.

He has allowed just one hit in 4ô innings while walking one and striking out five.

“Very impressive,” manager Jack McKeon said of Winchester, who's competing for the last spot in the bullpen.

At St.Petersburg, Osvaldo Fernandez remained competitive for the No.5 starting spot.

His four shutout innings featured two strikeouts of Devil Rays slugger Jose Canseco, who later homered off Heath Murray.

Losing pitcher John Riedling allowed three consecutive two-out singles, the last one by Alex Sanchez, as Tampa Bay won in the ninth. • THE BATS: Four Reds in a row reached base safely in the fifth inning as they broke a 4-4 tie against Minnesota.

Ken Griffey Jr. drew a one-out walk, Dante Bichette singled, and Sean Casey walked before Alex Ochoa belted a two-run single.

Hal Morris' eighth-inning homer accounted for the Reds' lone run against Tampa Bay. • THE REST: The Reds (6-5) have just one more split-squad doubleheader, Tuesday against Minnesota and Philadelphia. • UP NEXT: Tonight against the New York Yankees at Sarasota, Denny Neagle will face Yankees right-hander Ramiro Mendoza, who has been the subject of trade talks involving the Reds and numerous other clubs.
