Minor injuries pain Reds
Williamson strains calf, will miss day or two
BY CHRIS HAFT
The Cincinnati Enquirer
SARASOTA, Fla. The Reds' list of annoying injuries grew longer Thursday when reliever Scott Williamson suffered a mild strain of his right upper calf
as he pitched against the Minnesota Twins.
You never want to go through these kind of little things, said Williamson, who retired the first batter he faced in the fifth inning before yielding consecutive doubles to Denny Hocking and Chad Allen.
Williamson became the third prominent Red to land in the trainer's room since exhibition play began last Friday. Second baseman Pokey Reese (sprained right ring finger) will be out until at least the middle of next week. First baseman Sean Casey (bruised right leg) returned to the lineup Thursday after missing a game.
Williamson's injury didn't generate undue concern. The right-hander walked gingerly but without a limp as he left the clubhouse. But trainer Greg Lynn wasn't sure when Williamson would return. The National League's reigning Rookie of the Year probably will need at least a day or two of treatment before trying to throw again.
I really think he's going to be OK, Lynn said.
Williamson, who said his calf had been really tight for the last four or five days, realized he was in trouble when he couldn't push off the leg.
When I was throwing, it was all arm, Williamson said. When they see that, they have to get you out of there.
Though pitchers often need more time to recover from injuries to their push-off legs, manager Jack McKeon remained calm.
Now, if he turned and twisted on the side, it would be different, McKeon said. Since it's the back of the leg, I don't think it'll be too much of a problem.
