Griffey steps to the plate for Pepsi

BY JOHN J. BYCZKOWSKI
The Cincinnati Enquirer

New Red Ken Griffey Jr. has signed a multiyear endorsement deal with Pepsi, as the soft-drink company moves to increase its ties to baseball.

“We've just decided to step up our marketing around baseball ... to market to youth especially,” Pepsi spokesman Dave DeCecco said.

        Terms were not disclosed.

Mr. Griffey will join Pepsi's “Takin' it to the Fields” promotion, aimed at 110,000 youth baseball and softball teams, with 1.3 million players. Each team gets a Pepsi cooler with baseball books and coupons for products.

This season will be Pepsi's first as the soft drink served during Reds games at Cinergy Field, having replaced Coca-Cola.

Pepsi last week signed Chicago Cub Sammy Sosa, reportedly to a seven-figure deal.
