REDS REPORT
Reds 3, Phillies 1 (at Sarasota)
Reds 5, Phillies 4 (at Clearwater)
THE ARMS: Mark Portugal was given a 65-pitch limit before he was lifted with two on and two outs in the fourth inning after throwing 70 pitches. Scott Winchester coaxed a groundout from Kevin Sefcik to end the threat. If you're looking at him as a reliever, it was a good opportunity for him to get in a pressure situation, manager Jack McKeon said of Winchester.
THE BATS: Moeller High School graduate Mike Bell lofted a seventh-inning sacrifice fly as a pinch hitter to produce a key insurance run in the game at Sarasota. At Clearwater, Brooks Kieschnick hit an RBI triple and a three-run homer, giving him a team-high five RBI.
THE REST: Chris Sexton, formerly of St.Xavier High and Miami University, started a slick seventh-inning double play by snaring Dave Doster's line drive with the infield playing shallow and Jimmy Rollins on third base. Sexton's throw to Aaron Boone doubled off Rollins for the inning-ending out.
UP NEXT: 7:05 p.m. against Pittsburgh. Steve Parris and the Pirates' Francisco Cordova are the starting pitchers.
