Monday's report

Pirates 11, Reds 4

        • THE ARMS: Right-hander Elmer Dessens, who took Deion Sanders' place on the 40-man roster, may have taken a step backward. Pitching against his former team, Dessens allowed four runs and five hits in two innings.

        • THE BATS: Chris Stynes opened the game with a home run on a full-count pitch from Pirates starter Kris Benson. After Barry Larkin doubled and Ken Griffey Jr. struck out, Dante Bichette broke an 0-for-11 skid with an RBI single. Stynes added an RBI double in the seventh before Cincinnati native Chris Sexton, who's hitting .429 (3-for-7), stroked a run-scoring single in the eighth.

        • THE REST: Former Reds ace Pete Schourek strengthened his bid for the No.5 starting spot in Pittsburgh's rotation by tossing three scoreless innings. Schourek was 18-7 for Cincinnati's NL Central Division champions in 1995.

        • UP NEXT: The Reds play a split-squad, split-site double-header against Philadelphia. Mark Portugal will oppose Philadelphia's Steve Sparks at Sarasota while Ron Villone faces the Phillies' Andy Ashby at Clearwater. CINCINNATI PITTSBURGH abrhbi
