Sunday's games report
BY CHRIS HAFT
The Cincinnati Enquirer
THE ARMS: Gabe White, who needed extra work, became the first veteran reliever to pitch two innings and received credit for the victory over Texas. Against Tampa Bay, rookie Rob Bell threw himself into the competition for the No.5 starting spot by allowing only three hits, including Quinton McCracken's home run, in four innings.
THE BATS: Dmitri Young, who struck out with the bases loaded to end the fifth inning, had an RBI single that keyed a three-run seventh inning against Texas. In the Tampa Bay game, D.T. Cromer, whose left eye remains discolored after he was hit by a bad-hop grounder last Sunday, went 5-for-5 and drove in a run.
THE REST: Left-hander Ty Howington, last year's No.1 draft choice, pitched a pair of scoreless innings against Tampa Bay in his first game. In the first inning against Texas, right fielder Michael Tucker made a nice running catch near the wall in foul territory.
UP NEXT: Heath Murray will start for the Reds (3-2) against Pittsburgh's Kris Benson. Ex-Red Pete Schourek is also expected to pitch for the Pirates.
