Reds ship 9 to minor-league camp
BY CHRIS HAFT
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Reds trimmed their spring roster to 62 players, 37 above the Opening Day limit, by reassigning nine players to minor-league camp.
All were non-roster players with no chance of making the Opening Day squad.
Right-hander Johnny Ruffin, who was among the reassigned players, requested and obtained his release. Ruffin, who pitched for the Reds from 1993-96, is expected to seek an opportunity with another club.
The list of reassigned players included seven other pitchers: right-handers Joe Borowski, Javier Martinez and Willis Roberts; and lefties Tom Fordham, Anthony Shelby, Terrell Wade and Neil Weber. Catcher Mike Stefanski was the only position player.
Asked if this reduction eased the overcrowded conditions in camp, manager Jack McKeon said: Not yet. It puts a dent in it; that's about all.
