Saturday's game report

Twins 5, Reds 3

        • THE ARMS: Five Reds pitchers managed to avoid issuing a single walk, which was perhaps the game's most pleasant aspect from Cincinnati's perspective. Pitching coach Don Gullett wants his starters to be ready to last seven innings by the end of spring; with his four-inning outing, Steve Parris already is more than halfway there.

        • THE BATS: Brandon Larson, the 1997 first-round draft choice who lined two doubles in an intrasquad game, homered to left field to ignite a four-run eighth inning. One of Hal Morris' RBI singles was a nicely executed hit-and-run job.

        • THE REST: Many observers believe that shortstop Gookie Dawkins is ready for the majors, at least defensively. He made two excellent plays Saturday, ranging to his right to gobble up Royce Clayton's first-inning grounder and leaping to snare Rafael Palmeiro's seventh-inning line drive.

        • UP NEXT: The Reds again divide into split squads to face Texas at Sarasota, Fla., and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in St. Petersburg. Pete Harnisch and Denny Neagle will pitch against the Rangers, while Rob Bell is scheduled to oppose Tampa Bay's Wilson Alvarez.
