Big Red Machine shuttles to Cooperstown
Two are in. Three more are coming. And only extraordinary circumstances keep another out.
The Big Red Machine, already represented in the Hall of Fame by catcher Johnny Bench and second baseman Joe Morgan, will drop off three more figures in Cooperstown July 23: first baseman Tony Perez, broadcaster Marty Brennaman and now manager Sparky Anderson.
I knew Sparky was going to get in. I was waiting for him, Perez told the Associated Press Tuesday night. It's a perfect match: three from Cincinnati during the '70s being inducted into the Hall of Fame at the same time.
Pete Rose, leadoff hitter for the Big Red Machine and baseball's all-time hits leader, would be in the Hall if not for the lifetime ban he agreed to in 1989 after an investigation of his gambling.
