Cameron's speed will best help M's
The Associated Press
PEORIA, Ariz. Mike Cameron had never been to a Seattle Mariners' training camp, still he's aware that things are different this year.
It was a typical day, a quiet day, Cameron said Wednesday after the Mariners' first full-squad workout. It would be different if Griff were here, but I'm ready to start playing.
Cameron was among four players sent to Seattle by the Reds two weeks ago for Ken Griffey Jr. and takes over Griffey's spot in center field.
Everybody knows Griffey can't be replaced unless you bring in Sammy (Sosa) or Mark McGwire, said Cameron, who hit .256 with 21 homers and 38 stolen bases for the Reds last season. It's going to be my job to play a Gold Glove center field, get on base and run like hell.
Had he remained in Cincinnati, Cameron figures he would have been sent to the unfamiliar territory of right field. In Seattle, however, he both remains in center and could become one of the keys to the Mariners' revamped offense in pitcher-friendly Safeco Field.
Seattle manager Lou Piniella has said Cameron will bring some much-needed speed to the Mariners' lineup.
I don't hit 50 home runs so it may be better for me, Cameron said. I just need to put the ball in play a little more.
