Perez' No. 24 will be retired in May

SARASOTA, Fla. Tony Perez's jersey No. 24 will be retired officially during pregame ceremonies May 27 when the Reds face the Florida Marlins at Cinergy Field.
Perez, who was named to the Baseball Hall of Fame last month, will be in Cincinnati for that weekend series as one of the Marlins' special assistants to the general manager.
The Big Red Machine first baseman will join a select group of Cincinnati legends who have had their numbers retired: Fred Hutchinson (1), Johnny Bench (5), Joe Morgan (8), Ted Kluszewski (18) and Frank Robinson (20).
Perez will be inducted into the Hall at Cooperstown, N.Y., July 23. He'll be joined by announcer Marty Brennaman, recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award, and quite possibly former Reds manager Sparky Anderson, a leading candidate to be named to the Hall by the Veterans Committee.
