Reds face fine from Griffey talks
BY CHRIS HAFT
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Amid the euphoria lingering from the acquisition of Ken Griffey Jr., the Reds still face a possible fine stemming from the events leading to Thursday's historic trade with the Seattle Mariners.
Sandy Alderson, the executive vice president of operations for Major League Baseball, said Friday that he will rule soon if either team violated any procedures before announcing the deal.
It's under review, Alderson told Bloomberg Business News. Nothing would interfere with the trade, but we'll look at whether the rules were observed as they must be. And if not, we'll take appropriate action.
Reds officials declined comment.
Cincinnati would not have obtained Griffey without being able to negotiate a long-term contract with him. But baseball's rules dictate that teams must agree on the players involved in a trade before a player can initiate negotiations with his new club. They also must ask the commissioner to grant a 72-hour window for these talks.
There were indications that the teams may not have followed the proper sequence. Tuesday, the Mariners announced they had allowed Brian Goldberg, Griffey's agent, to approach the Reds. That apparently happened before Seattle agreed to obtain center fielder Mike Cameron, right-hander Brett Tomko, minor-league infielder Antonio Perez and minor-league reliever Jake Meyer from Cincinnati.
