Seattle says Junior talks back on, but Reds disagree

BY CHRIS HAFT
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Prospects for a Ken Griffey Jr. trade seemed to materialize anew Tuesday in Seattle. But they remained bleak in Cincinnati.

Reds Chief Operating Officer John Allen and General Manager Jim Bowden dismissed comments made by Seattle Mariners GM Pat Gillick, who said that he was still trying to trade Griffey.

“It's not a dead issue with me,” Gillick told the Seattle Times. “... We're still taking into consideration what he wants to do. Even though something hasn't happened now, we're still proceeding.”

Asked if he has discussed a Griffey trade with any team, Gillick said, “I can't really say, but we're still talking.”

Asked whether he has conducted Griffey trade talks recently with Bowden, Gillick replied, “I haven't had any, but our organization has.”

Bowden maintained the stance he took Dec.11, when the Reds withdrew from the Griffey derby after nearly six weeks of talks with the Mariners.

“Nothing has changed since that Saturday at the Winter Meetings,” Bowden said. “Nothing has changed since we agreed to disagree. No trade proposals have been exchanged between Seattle and Cincinnati since that day.”

Bowden said he and other Reds officials have discussed trades with their Seattle coun terparts, but not about Griffey.

Allen echoed his GM: “We're not going to give away the farm to acquire Ken Griffey Jr. this season. The price is just way too high, in terms of player personnel. It's a dead issue.”
