Reds to honor champs
Sleeve patches recall '75, '90
BY JOHN ERARDI
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Reds players will be wearing a new patch on their uniform sleeves this year with a 25 and a 10 on it.
Those figures represent the 10th and 25th anniversaries of the World Championships of the Big Red Machine of 1975 and the wire-to-wire winners of 1990.
It is a slick image, featuring the black trim that highlighted last year's new uniforms and the spiffy-looking Mr. Red.
There has never been any question about the place in history of the 1975-76 Reds, the back-to-back World Series winners (Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez & Co.), who are regarded as one of the greatest dynasties in baseball history.
The 1990 team always has been in the Big Red Machine's shadow but the new logo sharpens its profile.
The '90 Reds swept the Oakland A's of Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco. The A's had a rough time with the Reds starting pitching that featured Jose Rijo, and they were shredded by the bullpen trio known as the Nasty Boys Norm Charlton, Rob Dibble and Randy Myers.
The '90 champs will be feted as part of Redsfest Jan. 28-29 at the Albert B. Sabin Convention Center.
