ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays signed free agent Juan Guzman to a two-year contract, with an option for a third year, on Friday.
Guzman, 33, was a combined 11-12 with a 3.74 ERA in 33 starts last season for Baltimore and the Reds.
Juan brings not only outstanding pitching credentials, but a tremendous competitive spirit and the experience of pitching for championship ballclubs, General Manager Chuck LaMar said.
Tampa Bay also re-signed free agent reliever Norm Charlton on Friday. The 36-year-old left-hander appeared in 42 games for the Devil Rays last season, going 2-3 with a 4.44 ERA in 50 2/3 innings.
Guzman was traded from Baltimore to Cincinnati last July 31. He was 6-3 with a 3.03 ERA in 12 starts for the Reds.
CARDINALS: Andy Benes has returned to the St. Louis Cardinals.
I'm thrilled to death to be coming back, said Benes, who agreed to an $18 million, three-year free-agent contract. I really felt in my heart St. Louis is the place I want to be. The last couple years I've had on a different color uniform, but my heart was in St. Louis.
Benes was 18-10 on the Cardinals' NL Central championship team in 1996. He left as a free agent after 1997 for the expansion Arizona Diamondbacks.
Benes, 32, was 13-12 with a 4.81 ERA in 198ô innings last year with Arizona and won six of his last seven decisions.
