Deion now free agent

BY CHRIS HAFT
The Cincinnati Enquirer

As expected, the Reds tendered contracts to all nine of their arbitration-eligible players while declining to tender a contract to outfielder Deion Sanders.

The move regarding Sanders was purely procedural. Though it made the Dallas Cowboys cornerback a free agent, it allowed the Reds to re-sign him if he decided to resume playing baseball, which he dropped in 1997.

Cincinnati's arbitration-eligible players are second baseman Pokey Reese, outfielders Mike Cameron, Dmitri Young and Michael Tucker, first baseman-outfielder Mark Sweeney, left-handers Ron Villone and Gabe White and right-handers Scott Sullivan and Steve Parris.
