Reds add top talent scout
The Reds scored a coup Friday by hiring Gary Hughes as director of professional scouting and special assistant to the general manager.
Hughes, 58, established himself as a peerless judge of talent by helping first the Montreal Expos, then the Florida Marlins, build vast reserves of skilled players.
He was instrumental in Montreal's development of notable players such as infielders Delino DeShields and Mark Grudzielanek, center fielder Marquis Grissom, outfielder-first baseman Cliff Floyd and pitchers Carlos Perez and Ugueth Urbina.
In seven years with Florida, both as director of scouting and vice president of player personnel, Hughes was involved in the emergence of 1997 World Series hero Livan Hernandez, shortstop Edgar Renteria and catcher Charles Johnson.
Hughes, who spent the past year with the Colorado Rockies as their vice president of player personnel, has 33 years' experience in scouting and player development.
