Pokey's glove gold?

He'll find out Wednesday

BY CHRIS HAFT
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Reds second baseman Pokey Reese has established himself as a strong candidate to win the Gold Glove award for defensive excellence, which will be announced Wednesday for National League recipients.

But Reese's relative lack of a reputation could hurt his chances.

Gold Glove balloting is conducted by managers and coaches in each league. The award is distributed by Rawlings. Though Reese had ample opportunity to display his fielding skill in his first full season at second base, the simple fact is that voters tend to select players with whom they're most familiar. Houston's Craig Biggio, a four-time Gold Glove winner, is the league's most recognizable second basemen. He'll again contend, along with Atlanta's Bret Boone, last year's winner as a Red, and New York's Edgardo Alfonzo.

Reese was consistent as well as spectacular, committing just one error in his first 85 games while recording errorless streaks that spanned 67 games and 314 total chances. Reese finished with a .991 fielding percentage, committing seven errors in 741 total chances.

Primarily a shortstop until this season, Reese enhanced his defense by hitting .285 with 10 homers, 52 RBI and 38 steals.
