LAS VEGAS Ken Griffey Jr., the Seattle Mariners outfielder who has asked his team to trade him, was voted player of the 1990s by major leaguers in the Players Choice Awards announced Friday night.
Griffey, who has 398 career homers and is just 29, beat out Atlanta Braves pitcher Greg Maddux and San Francisco outfielder Barry Bonds.
Balloting was conducted by the players' association in September, with players on all 30 teams eligible to vote.
Griffey missed the awards show, saying via a TV hookup from his Florida home that he wanted to attend his son's first baseball game on Saturday. Griffey made no comment about his trade request.
Boston pitcher Pedro Martinez won player of the year, and Chicago Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa won man of the year, which is given to a player for performance on the field and contributions to the community.
Among the American League awards, Cleveland outfielder Manny Ramirez was voted outstanding player, Martinez outstanding pitcher, Kansas City outfielder Carlos Beltran outstanding rookie and first baseman John Jaha comeback player.
In the NL, Atlanta third baseman Chipper Jones was voted outstanding player, Houston's Mike Hampton outstanding pitcher, Florida outfielder Preston Wilson outstanding rookie and Florida pitcher Alex Fernandez comeback player.
