Harnisch, Reds disagree on surgery
BY CHRIS HAFT
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Saying that his sore right shoulder no longer was an issue, Reds right-hander Pete Harnisch said Thursday that he doesn't think he needs surgery.
Harnisch said he planned to begin a strengthening program with Lonnie Soloff, the club's physical therapist, after taking a month off.
My arm feels fine right now, Harnisch said from his Florida home. I'm going to rest and rehab it, and I'll be back. It's as simple as that.
Since Reds management still thinks Harnisch might need surgery, he plans to visit Dr. David Altchek, a New York Mets team orthopedist, for a second opinion next week. Altchek repaired a torn labrum in Harnisch's shoulder in 1995.
That's because I guess they (the Reds) want me to, Har nisch said of his date with Altchek. I wasn't planning on doing anything.
Even if Harnisch immediately underwent another operation on his labrum or rotator cuff, he could miss the start of the 2000 season if the timing of his recovery is similar to his last one. He didn't resume pitching in the majors until April14, 1996, nearly eight months after surgery. Opening Day is less than six months away.
Harnisch pitched through shoulder pain from June on, leading the staff in wins (16), starts (33) and innings (198ô).
