REDS NOTEBOOK
No decision on Harnisch surgery
BY CHRIS HAFT
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Reds and Pete Harnisch are expected to decide within a week to 10 days if the right-hander will need surgery to ease the pain in his aching shoulder.
Dr. Tim Kremchek, the team's medical director, said the team already has received multiple opinions on whether Harnisch needs an operation or continued rehabilitation. Kremchek raised the possibility of consulting Dr. David Altchek, who repaired a torn labrum in Harnisch's right shoulder on Aug. 18, 1995, for yet another view.
Everybody has kind of alluded to the fact that he's going to have (surgery), Kremchek said of Harnisch, the Reds' leading winner at 16-10. But there's no definitive word.
Harnisch initially complained of shoulder trouble on June 6 but continued to pitch, ultimately leading the team with 198ô innings.
One Red who definitely will undergo surgery is first baseman-outfielder Mark Sweeney, whose shoulder will be fixed by Kremchek today. Sweeney, the Reds' top pinch hitter with a .355 average (11-for-31), injured his labrum while in Triple-A.
SIGNING TIME: Reds reliever Danny Graves and outfielder Dmitri Young will sign free autographs on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the Miami Valley Centre Mall Sports Card Show in Piqua.
REDS ON ESPN RADIO: Young and Jeffery Hammonds will be in Bristol, Conn., Wednesday and Thursday to be guests on ESPN Radio. They will be on the morning show, with Mike Golic, from 6 to 10 a.m. and on Game Night from 7 to 11 p.m. each day.
