Astros rest, prepare to take on Dodgers

The Associated Press

HOUSTON — After maintaining a share of first place with Cincinnati after a two-game split, the Houston Astros know they can't let up this weekend.

“We've got three games left, and we've got to play the same way,” center fielder Carl Everett said after the Astros beat the Reds 4-1 Wednesday. “We can't worry about what the other teams are doing.”

Cincinnati and Houston, both 95-64, were off Thursday. The Astros finish the regular season with a three-game series against Los Angeles — the final games scheduled for the Astrodome. The Reds travel to Milwaukee.

And lurking behind are the New York Mets, two games back in the wild-card race.

“We're still not clicking of fensively,” Astros manager Larry Dierker said, noting that a throwing error by shortstop Barry Larkin gave Houston three unearned runs Wednesday.

Several Astros ranked Wednesday's win as the biggest so far. Normally stoic Mike Hampton pumped his left fist after fanning Dmitri Young in the eighth.

“I don't usually show a lot of emotion out there, but it was late in the game, and I needed to shut the door and not let any cheap runs in,” Hampton said.

Hampton said he thinks the Astros, who have lost eight of 12, are ready for a return to form against Los Angeles.

“This is a scrappy bunch of guys,” he said. “With all the injuries we've had this year, we've been through a lot. But it's brought us closer together, and I think we've gotten better because of it.”
