Mark McGwire says he'll think about the milestones after the season or when he retires.

Sunday after becoming the second player in history to hit 60 home runs in two different seasons — Sammy Sosa became the first do it last week — McGwire couldn't help but think he'd rather be in the Reds' position now.

McGwire's home run, a solo shot off Scott Sullivan, came in the seventh inning of the Reds' 7-5 victory over McGwire's St. Louis Cardinals. The Reds, who took over the NL wild-card lead with the win, overshadowed McGwire's achievement.

“You watch them celebrating,” McGwire said, “and you wish that this team could experience that some day.”

The Cardinals clubhouse was quiet. The Reds won the game after the Cards took a 5-4 lead in the top of the 12th. Pokey Reese hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning.

McGwire's home run gave him 400 in the 1990s. He becomes the third player to hit 400 in a decade. Babe Ruth did it in the 1920s, and Jimmie Foxx did it in the 1930s.

“It's another milestone,” said McGwire, who set the record with 70 homers last year.“I'll savor all that stuff when I retire.”

McGwire's ball cleared the fence in left field but did not make the stands. The grounds crew returned it to him.

“So it's not up for hostage,” McGwire said.

Another collector figured an other way to cash on No. 60. Two people bought 1,500 tickets after McGwire's home run.

“I'm sure I'll end up signing some of them somewhere,” he said.
